The Glenstal Book of Prayer from the monks of Glenstal Abbey has become a fixture of my evening prayer life.
When I saw a book review last year for this book, I was attracted to it because it was authored by Benedictine monks in Co. Limerick, Ireland. I am a parishioner at a Benedictine parish, I hold Co. Limerick in high esteem (I visited Co. Limerick several years ago), and I am drawn to monastic life. I ordered a copy.
When I first read the book, I was glad to have ordered it. It’s a pocket-book sized, making it portable (I could take it with me when traveling). Aspects of the book remind me of two other books I have reviewed:
- The Tradition of Catholic Prayer by the Benedictine monks of Saint Meinrad Monastery
- The Liturgy of the Hours (spoiler alert: a new edition of the The Liturgy of the Hours is coming out in 2027)
The Glenstal Book of Prayer provides a cyclical rotation of prayers that calm the mind and heart while rooting one within Christianity’s established prayer life. Whenever I am restless at the end of the day or wake up in the night and find myself unable to sleep, I turn to this book.
